The Olympic Games
The Olympic Games originated from the encouraged competitiveness that inspired each Greek to be the best they could be. The young were encouraged to spend time and effort practicing athletics. This led to a highly competitive race of people.
The Games themselves were based on the worship of several gods known to the Greeks and for one month out of four years (Olympiad), a truce called 'Spondorophoroi' was issued throughout Greece. This meant that all the warring factions and other hostilities would be ordered to cease in order to compete, or allow safe passage to those who were travelling to the games, in an attempt to unite the country for just one month of the year. This meant that some may be rubbing shoulders with others that they would rather not be too close to!
Today the Olympics are still as important in getting countries together, to set politics to one side and compete in a sporting manner, side by side, spurred on by each individual who watches and supports the events, regardless of political persuasion.
